Gamerz 4 Fun

Twas the season…

by Lazzy on Dec.28, 2009, under G4F

Our clan members are starting to drift back into TS and server from their respective Christmas breaks and enforced family vists, and our 2010 gaming campaign looks to be rolling in the right direction.

We have finally decided to start playing within the ESL – PAM4 HC league – happily, both Turd and Elmo have put themselves forward to oversee this venture and the guys are starting to enroll on ESL as required. Our first match is on the 10th and we should have suitably recovered from New Years by then! In addition, pre-Xmas I played a bit of FC (the results of which are below), and spoke to Screenie about getting some FC scrims and yesterday found a challenge from COC, not those funny entities within TAW, but Commanders of Chaos, so looks like we have a match there too, on the 2nd January. Places within the team are fast filling, Bunny is back from his outdoors exploits and is playing well – we have also found ourselves Eros – a new FC member and a rare find these days!

Yesterday was a bit of a marathon gaming-wise. Having woken up at 6am (no excuses) and feeling like shite, I watched an entire football match and an morning session of the England vs South Africa Test match before 11am and my arrival on TS. Gladly, I found Turd was already in situ and the afternoon and evening were spent gaming solidly, with Elmo, Bulldog and Dragon all joining in!

A few extracts….

On a separate note, if you’re a regular visitor to our site, you will have noticed that our COD servers have been dead for ages – looks like there won’t be any server fees due for January!

Hopefully, everyone will have a great New Year!

Til 2010…

G4F vs LCFC?!

by Lazzy on Dec.18, 2009, under G4F

Not many people outside of our clan will know that I am a Leicester City supporter – even fewer will know why, but this is neither the time or the place to explain that! I wouldn’t usually mention football here, after all many gamers hate the sport; however, there is some relevance today. it appears that the poorly paid and extremely busy players at LCFC take time out to enjoy playing COD online.

The following extract is from the website of The Leicester Mercury (local paper) and all rights etc belong to them (don’t sue me)…

“Around half a dozen of the squad have formed a team and play the Call of Duty video game together nearly every day online.

And Morrison, who has recently fought his way back into the City front line in place of right back Robbie Neilson, said they regularly battle it out on the digital battlefield with a rival team from Wolves.

Morrison said the gaming is a perfect distraction from the pressures of football.

He added: “We all go online and we have a little team. There are about six of us who do it. Paul Gallagher does it, Matty Fryatt and Ashley Chambers, who is probably our best player.

“We all go online with the little headsets. I have a few people over and I have a little gaming chair. It is good fun, although it doesn’t go down too well with the girls. It is a bit of a geeky hobby.”"

Spending all day playing football, being paid thousands of pounds and having lots of time to practice tactics – I couldn’t be more jealous!

So…it’s been a while

by Lazzy on Dec.14, 2009, under G4F

It’s that time of year again, nights well and truly drawn in and work is hell = not a lot of blog posts from Lazzy! Being busy at work means many things, but mainly that I just like to crash and not get online too much, boring bastard that I become! Anyhow, eventually, I dragged my sorry backside online, reaquainted myself with the idea of gaming and played…..Farcry?!

Farcry is where G4F started out back in May 2007 – even before that, a few of our “core” members were playing and enjoying Farcry for a couple of years. I don’t think there is really anything about our history on our webpage, other than a throw away comment about breaking away from a former clan….so maybe this is the place to lay it out, settle the record?

When I think about the beginnings our our humble clan, I can only consider Farcry – before that I hadn’t really played anything online, other than a few games of quake back in the mid-neneties. The ultimate re-introduction of online gaming was down to -G4F- Boosh’s uncle! I saw and played online whilst on a family visit and it was good fun – I shortly wandered around and got my hands on a copy of Farcry, and jumped online. As with any online game, if you are clanless, at times, you can feel a bit left out – where should I start, what are clans, do I want to be in one, what will be expected of me?!

After a few months of dallying around in my white name, I came across a clan who’s entire purpose was to mock another – maybe not the most sensible of choices; however, they were ultimately accepting anyone and expected very little! No TS, no ties, no anything so a simple choice to join up and get a feeling of belonging. Funnily enough, I met some great people in that clan – some of which I still have the pleasure of calling my clan-mates, others that have gone on to setup and run new clans and who I still hold in high regards. Despite the dodgy grounding of that clan, no-one could argue that it wasn’t beneficial for the Farcry community, or for the UK gaming community going forward – what a statement!

Ultimately, that clan which asked for nothing and gave nothing collapsed and I was invited to join a clan called Team Legends. TL| were a well established clan with many members. It required that you used their TS, got involved, played scrims etc and I was fully involved with a “proper” clan. Ultimately, the clan was filled with “large personalities” and there were a series of fallings out. That, combined with the demise of Farcry and that lack of obvious replacement, meant that the clan died a slow death. Such was the impact of TL, that we recently found the clan (the name and URL having been bought by a previous member) playing COD4; however, I was disappointed to see that it did not flourish and is now back in hibernation…maybe another former member will seek to raise it’s fortunes??

Off the back of TL|, one of the members had moved to setup a new company in cahoots with a server hosting company. Following a little persuasion, a few of us moved and set about making ~G|C~ a success. The whole premise was to get a good community, build links with other games and ultimately to promote the server company. Quite a change from my initial clan, but ultimately we had very good servers and, being one of the early members, we were trusted to keep the good name of the clan and company – something we did and took pride in. Whilst in the process, we recruited well and made some good friends. However, ultimately the main admin did not have the time to run his business of the clan, admin privileges were not shared and we were left without the tools to drive our community forward. This all came to a head when we were hacked (twice in a week). So fast was the response from our main admin that, by the time the site had been recovered the first time, we had already setup another forum and were busy managing ourselves!

I think that the complete lack of control was the reason behind the question of whether we should setup a new clan. A couple of us started to research the idea heavily and within a couple of weeks we had made the decision to go ahead, and G4F was born. In some ways, I regret that we were forced into setting up something new; however, it ultimately meant that we were able to, and still are able to, remain together as the group of fellow gamers that have a very similar view on gaming and life. I wouldn’t change a thing!

Anyhow, I think i started out trying to explain how G4F came about but all the above seems to be about me – maybe we are fairly inseparable? I have never claimed to be bigger or better than this clan and, if the guys think that I may be taking the piss a little, they put me right back in my place – bastards!

Farcry with Rub on Saturday morning brought me all the way back to the beginning – they were a tough couple of games, but were fun. I’ve spoken to Screenfly and asked him to organise a match or two – sometimes I think it’s healthy to take a step back and to remember where you came from……very philosophical :)

The screenshots…… (I’m the one in Green, White and Blue at the top!)

I may be a little rusty and the game controls are a bit alien but I don’t think I did so badly….bet it’ll be a different story in a match though!

Saturday Night & Sunday Morning….

by Lazzy on Nov.29, 2009, under G4F, Matches

So, Turd has posted a vote in our forums about what league we should join going forward – still need to research some items. In addition, Tyr Anasazi from TDS dropped into TS last night to speak about MW2 within the Euro Domination League – sounds fairly good, although he also offered us the chance to run the DGL for the next season for COD4. Too many options i reckon!

Saturday night was a motley affair, playing 7v7 scrims which is never wholly conducive to a team mentality – let alone when half of the team have been hitting the bottle fairly hard!!!! IMP and WW joined us for the first scrim and we managed a duo of draws – lots of frustration on our part but it was only a friendly afterall…

We’ll get you next time IMP!

We were due to play a third map with IMP and co but Bully had agreed a match with D3 so we apologised to them and moved to D3’s server. 10 minutes later we had not started and ascertained that none of their members had rcon for their server! Switch to our server and were given a good beating…..

More work to be done.

Sunday morning started out slowly – loading the washing machine has to be done but, upon my return to the PC, Elmo was already online fragging. I wanted to jump in straight away but decided to look at one of our long-standing website problems – our bloody donations block. The thing works but does not show donations within the block itself – cue a little browsing, an adjustment of a few Paypal setting and the thing might (lots of emphasis on that word) work – we’ll see.

Elmo and I moved onto the MG clan’s server and got stuck into a largely one sided affair – fortunately, we were on the stronger side and things were pretty damn easy. All of a sudden, half of the opposition left – probably sick of losing convincingly. Turd has joined us by that point and, through some amazing mathematical calculation, we decided that we could all join the opposition and make even teams. 8-20 down in a first on 25 match – not many would have given us a chance.

The final outcome…

Result – well played team!

Slow Tuesdays….

by Lazzy on Nov.25, 2009, under Matches

So – although the week started slowly, you can almost guarantee a scrim or two each and every night when the sun seems to have disappeared at around 16.30. Nowt going on last night, I had played a little modern Warfare 2 Singleplayer and then joined Nooby1 for a few rounds of TDM on a 24/7 Broadcast server – much swearing, wall spamming and frustration – although we did fare pretty well on each attempt.

The Ginger Prince (Yomper/Redant (delete as applicable)) had been busy of late, being self-emplyed is definetely not a great idea if you plan to do lots of gaming (unless you’re a professional gamer)! Yomps xfired me around 21.00 to see if I fancied a scrim and we were soon joined by another clan on our PAM4 server.

First map was backlot – not one of our favourites, but we stormed into a good lead on defence – Shogun proving particularly effective. Attack was less successful and we came away with a draw…

Second map – our choice, so Strike it was. We were pretty confident that we could find the win, having played the map a fair amount over the last few months. With Raven picking up the rear, we set about attacking and again stored into an early lead. A stern defence on second half ensured that the result was convincing – probably not as harsh a result as the opposition deserved!

Strangely enough, after having discussed a few points in our TS meeting, it was a quiet night in TS during the match and it seemed to pay dividends!

Team Meeting…

by Lazzy on Nov.22, 2009, under G4F

OK, so a fairly pain free evening with a really good turn out from the guys.

No definitive answers this time around; however, with MW2 being in no fit state for scrims we will definitely be continuing with COD4, not that it was ever in doubt! We do, however, have to decide where we will ply our competitive trade from hereon – will it be Clanbase, another season of the DGL or ESL, where a few of the guys have been playing 3v3 of late? Some investigation required and we should have a final answer by the end of the week!

Other than the lack of decision on the possibly contentious issue, no surprises (which is always a relief)!

Thanks to the guys for turning up in numbers for the meeting….it’s always appreciated!

Friday 21 November – Freindly with [MG]

by Lazzy on Nov.22, 2009, under Matches

Firstly, we only found the Maugan clan a couple of weeks ago but they’re very much a kin to us – relaxed and friendly players, grouped together for competition with fun at at the heart of everything that they do. Last week, I spent an evening in their Ventrilo and had a ball playing as part of their team.

In reversal, Free joined our TS last night and we enjoyed 3/4 maps – all played in good spirit.

A quality night of gaming – thanks Maugan!

Hello world!

by Lazzy on Nov.22, 2009, under G4F

Well, after much talk and little anticipation G4F finally has it’s own blog. We aren’t sure whether many people will visit on a regular basis, but we hope that some will and that others will visit from time to time! In addition, this blog will act as the most simple source of match comment and screenshots from our most recent outings in the friendly and competitive scrim arena.

Many of our members will have access to this blog, and I expect you will see postings from some of our regulars. I cannot apologise enough for some of the language that may appear, however, I feel that it’s important that the thoughts and feelings of our members goes unedited (although, at times, that may prove interesting)!

So – onto the real business (now that I’ve done the mandatory welcome)! At G4F, we are something of a crossroads, sandwiched between the excellent Call of Duty 4 and the largely disappointing (in terms of multiplayer) Modern Warfare 2. This issue is not wholly surprising, some of our members are still playing Farcry and refuse to look elsewhere for their online gaming needs – not mentioning any names (Screenie and Rub!!!). We have made catastrophic game choices before – we crazily all bought Enemy Territory Quake Wars, and what a load of shit that turned out to be – such potential but never realised. The same could and may well yet be said about MW2.

The game itself is blatantly the console version, squeezed into a PC format. The effort is seriously lacking, almost like taking Pavarotti (sorry to mock the dead, but he’s the obvious choice) and trying to fit him into a suit made for Justin Timberlake! With a bit of ripping and uncomfort, Infinity Ward have managed to get the bloody thing to work, but with all the bulges of skin and fat hanging just outside of the suit, it’s a bit messy and unsightely in places!

Gameplay-wise, it’s good but I don’t think we will be seeing proper competitive matches (ala COD4) until the modders have finished their work – probably within the next couple of months. Good strides are already being made towards setting up dedi servers and match mods cannot be far behind.

For G4F, we will have a meeting tonight and I’ll post some of the outcomes here in due.

Until then………

-G4F- Lazzy
